Plot
Residing with her four sisters in a rundown cottage, Kitty Talbot must hatch a plan to keep the creditors at bay and ensure her sisters’ survival. Deciding to find a wealthy husband, she heads to London with her prettiest sister to ingratiate herself into high society. Arriving on their Aunt’s doorstep, Kitty realises there is much effort involved in securing invites to balls and parties, and getting a foot in the door. Then she must find herself a suitable suitor. A chance meeting throws her in the path of young and wealthy gentlemen, but there are many obstacles to their courtship, including the mysterious Lord Radcliffe who thinks he can see through Kitty’s act and return her to her rightful place.
Verdict
★★★★★
A sparkling, witty, engaging and sometimes poignant battle of the sexes and classes. The pace is perfect, the story unravels beautifully, and the characters are engaging and well-rounded. A Lady’s Guide to Fortune-Hunting is just a joy to read. Think Jane Austen with a dash of William Makepeace Thackeray and you’re almost there. This is one of my favourite reads of 2022.
